Ed's Sk8toronto Website TORONTO INLINE SKATING CLUB
TISC is an organization primarily dedicated to TRAINING AND RACING and is not a suitable place to learn to skate. That said, there is a wide variety of ability levels represented at most TISC workouts -from average to world class. The sexes are represented in roughly equal numbers and skaters range in age from around 10 to 60 years. Most workouts feature plenty of pack skating (drafting is a critical element in virtually every skating race) and simulated races between 300m and 15km. In my three years at TISC I've seen a fair number of people come for a while and then disappear. I have to assume that pack skating and so much racing is not for them. While TISC is not set up as a social club we travel to races and clinics in groups, train at least twice a week, and have a few parties each season -so we get to know each other pretty well. HOW TO FIND OUT IF TISC IS FOR YOU? . . Take advantage of the pay as you go workout policy. You can come to three practices before you must join. If you want to come back for a fourth workout you know you are hooked. DO TISC MEMBERS HAVE TO ENTER RACES? . . No, lots of TISC skaters rarely or never enter races. This is fine. There is little pressure to do so. I've also seen people choose not to race for quite a while before getting into it. DO YOU HAVE TO JOIN TISC AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON? . . No, in some ways this is the worst time to join because that's what most people do and so there is less individual attention from coaches and long-standing TISCers. Membership fees are pro-rated so there is nothing lost by joining part way through the season. ARE THERE ANY OTHER ADVANTAGES IN JOINING TISC? . .Yes, TISC members can often get a substantial discounts off skating equipment. As well, TISC has used some Trillium Grant money to purchase a small fleet of entry level inline racing skates. The idea is that new members can rent them at a reasonable cost and get a chance to try out the real thing before making the plunge into racing skates of their own. WEB SITE. . .TISC has a great web site. There is lots of information about the club, training, future races, race reports, and there are plenty of links to skating sites of every description.
